If you're anything like me, you'll have a wardrobe full of clothes but never anything to wear. I often find myself keeping clothes because I think I might wear them but in reality, I've never worn it, I'm not going to wear it. Every time I do my washing, I seem to find myself picking out and wearing the same outfits every time. My wardrobe is full of clothes that I don't actually wear or like so I used these steps below to help myself build a wardrobe that I love. Hopefully they'll help you too!
1. Firstly, clear out your wardrobe. Try and sell all the clothes that are in good condition that you’re getting rid of.
2. Be honest with yourself. Don’t keep something if you haven’t worn it in months just because you think there could be a time you’ll wear it because chances are, there won’t be.
3. What’s the first outfit you put on after you’ve done all your washing? Whatever that item is, use it as a guidline. If it’s your go to outfit and the first thing you grab from the clean washing pile, chances are it’s your favourite outfit and one that best fits your lifestyle. Buy things that are similar and you’re sure to love your wardrobe!
4. The next thing to think about is occasions. What occasions do you find that you have nothing to wear? A night out? Date night? Or just lounging around clothes. If you buy clothes for different occasions, you’re sure to always have something to wear that you love.
5. The next step is something quite fun that I often find myself doing. Spend some time on pinterest, looking for outfits that you love. Create a board with a name that appeals to you (Here’s mine: ‘Outfit Inspiration’) and pin all the outfits that you love to it. Then sit and go through your board and work out what pieces of clothing from it you already own and what pieces you need to buy.
6. Set yourself a clothing budget for the next few months. I find the best way to do this is to sit down and work out how much money you’ll have left for the month once all of your finances have been paid. Once you’ve done this, set yourself a small amount of that money that you can spend on clothes. For example, if you have £300 left over, set yourself a budget of £100.
7. What are the items you need straight away? These are the things you should buy first and then save for items that you don’t need but would like. This way, if you’ve got everything that you need, you won’t have any problems. Personally I like to write a list of all the items that I need to buy urgently and then a separate list of items that I’d like to buy.
8. Spend the most money on items that you’re likely to wear the most. As lovely as it is to spend most of your money on special occasion outfits, it makes so much more sense to spend more money on items that you wear weekly and buy higher quality items that will last. Although at the time it will seem like you’re spending a lot on single items, in the long run you’ll be saving money by not having to replace cheaper items every few months.
9. Don’t just buy something because you like the look of it. Something might look amazing in the picture or on someone else but may not work with your body shape. Instead buy things that you’ll get wear out of.
10. Finally, only buy clothes that you love. Don’t buy something if you’re not sure on it because chances are you won’t wear it. If you only buy clothes that you love, there’s no way you won’t love your wardrobe.
